Lzzy Hale Plays Up A Storm With Gibson

You may best know Lzzy Hale as vocalist and songwriter for the rock band Halestorm, which also features her brother, Arejay, on drums, Joe Hottinger on guitar and Josh Smith on bass. What you may not know is that she is an accomplished guitarist in her own right, playing both onstage and on the band’s self-titled album. Hale plays a Gibson Explorer, Les Paul Custom, Tribal Flying V, Firebird, and Joan Jett Signature Melody Maker, which was a gift from her band.
She switched from piano to guitar nine years ago, during the formative days of Halestorm. “I really love the guitar because it’s such an expressive instrument,” she says. “You can bend notes and make it sing.” Fans enjoy seeing her onstage with her Gibsons, as well. “It’s nice to have young girls tell me that they’re taking guitar lessons and that they look up to me,” she says. “That’s very humbling. I didn’t have anybody to do that for me at that age. I had to reach back to Nancy Wilson and Joan Jett. Parents come up and ask me what type of guitar I have, because they’re getting ready to buy their daughter a guitar. That makes me want to be a better player, because I know that people are watching and taking us seriously as a band. I want to be the best possible player. I want to shred!”
Hale credits Hottinger for helping her to grow as a musician. “We come from two opposite corners: ’80s metal for me and ’90s for him,” she says, “but we work really well together. He keeps me moving. To watch him onstage is extremely inspiring, and I draw from that.”
